The 7 Best Cookbooks for the Christmas Season

Every season I pull a new selection of cookbooks off my shelf and use them as my primary cooking resources for that time of year. It is not that I am trying to give them each equal attention, it is just that some cookbooks I find more useful for certain seasons than others. Ive already told you about my favorite cookbooks for summer and fall, now here are my favorite cookbooks for Christmas. These all have some great recipes and tips for the holiday season that I find truly indispensable. If you dont own any of these I highly recommend you flip through them the next time you are in the book store to take a look. You might just find the advice and recipes youve been looking for!

  The Gourmet Cookie Book

  This mouthwatering book focuses on the single best cookie recipe that appeared in Gourmet each year from 1941 - 2009. During the holiday season these recipes are indispensable. I love how many interesting and unique cookie recipes there are to choose from. I can put together a different Christmas cookie platter every year! It also makes a terrific hostess gift.

  Nigella Christmas

  This book is an obvious choice for the Christmas season. in this cheery tome Nigella serves up her best and most delicious holiday treats. My personal favorites are her recipes for stuffed pumpkin and sticky gingerbread.

  Martha Stewart Cookies

  Since the holiday season is probably the best time for cookies there is nothing like a cookbook solely dedicated to all of Martha Stewart's best cookie recipes. I always find something new in this book to try for the holidays. A particular favorite are the chocolate crackles and her perfect shortbread.

  This cookbook is arranged by season and all of the recipes in the fall and winter sections focus on the holiday season. I simply love the recipe for gin fruit and homemade marshmallows - both perfect homemade gifts - as well as the most decadent eggnog recipe in the world.

  Melissa is known for cooking at the whim of her appetite and this cookbook features many of her best dishes. It is full of many cozy home dishes that are perfect for the holiday season. My personal favorite is the figgy snacking cake - even the title alone sounds like the perfect holiday dish!

  I still turn to this cookbook during the holiday season because it is the best resource for cooking times and temps and always has every answer I need when it comes to baking questions. This is a must for every home cook, especially during the holiday season.

  The Ski House Cookbook by Tina Anderson and Sarah Pinneo

  What I love about this book is that it is full of cozy, delicious meals that are perfect for the holiday season. We love the beef chili and roasted brussels sprouts. Both are great for serving a crowd during the holidays.

My 7 Favorite Cookbooks for Fall

When fall rolls around I tuck away my summer cookbooks and pull out a new selection of fall favorites. A lot of them Ive been using for a few years, while some are newer to my shelves. Either way, they all contain some of the best hearty, healthy, delicious food for fall and winter. Since I live in the Northeast, this is especially pertinent; I have a long winter of cold-weather cooking to look forward to! Here are seven of my favorite cookbooks for fall. I hope youll consider adding them to your personal collection!

  Around My French Table by Dorie Greenspan

  Dorie Greenspan spends half her year in France and is familiar with Parisian cooking as a native. Luckily for us she's brought her terrific French recipes back to America with this awesome book. Some of my favorite recipes: her Mustard Batons (perfect for holiday entertaining), her roast chicken in a pot (photo on the cover), and her spiced madeleines. Her cozy recipes and friendly tone make this a perfect fall and winter cookbook.

  Cowgirl Chef by Ellise Pierce

  What I love about Ellise's book is how she perfectly marries French cuisine with Texan grub. My current favorite recipes from here are her chicken tortilla soup and warm French salad filled with roasted potatoes. Both are hearty dishes with just the right amount of spice and fun for cold weather.

  What Katie Ate by Katie Quinn Davies

  This gorgeously photographed book was just released this week! I've had a peek at it and it's simply to die for. Katie's warm, hearty Australian fare is perfect for fall. Just look at the delectable pie on the cover, it would be perfect for Thanksgiving!

  My Berlin Kitchen by Luisa Weiss

  Released this past September, this food memoir is an awesome cookbook and autobiography in one. Luisa based this book from her personal blog, talking about her life as a citizen of Germany and the U.S. and sharing all the recipes that she's developed in between. Her delicious tomato sauce is perfect for cold fall nights, and I've already come to love her idea for making an omelet with sugar and jam. (It makes for a terrific fall brunch!)

  This seasonal cookbook series is wonderful for families who want achievable recipes specifically created for fall and the holidays. I love their simple shortbread, as well as their cranberry sauce, turkey, and beef stew.

  What makes this pick perfect for fall is how practical it is for cold-weather cooking. Lucinda's book explains how she feeds her family of three ravenous boys, and all the recipes are incredibly down to earth and manageable for any home cook. We swear, her bagel breakfast sandwiches are just right for Saturday mornings, and her from-scratch meatballs and simple desserts will please busy families who love to eat. As someone with no sons, I can also tell you these recipes work just as well for hungry daughters!
