Leftover Halloween Candy Dump Cake

In the days and weeks after Halloween, everyone seems to have the same challenge: using up leftover Halloween candy. That has never been an issue around here I have no trouble getting rid of mini chocolate bars but having a giant bowl of them around the house is not the best idea. It was snowy and cold this Halloween, so not as many trick-or-treaters came around as usual. Which means leftovers. This dump cake makes use of whatever you have chop it all up and dump it on top, and you have a gooey, chocolatey, crunchy cake (we used plenty of KitKats!) that in this case, was perfect for a casual birthday party.

You could, of course, use any thick from-scratch cake batter here; but I think the nature of a dump cake is to use a cake mix, and dump everything into a bowl. Which youd do with ingredients anyway at any rate, it made use of that cake mix that has been on my bottom shelf for approximately a year.

Leftover Halloween Candy Dump Cake

1 box Devils Food cake mix
1 cup milk
1 cup sour cream or plain yogurt
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups chopped mini chocolate bars and/or caramels

Preheat the oven to 350F. In a large bowl, beat the cake mix, milk, sour cream and eggs until smooth; pour into a greased 913 pan. Sprinkle roughly chopped chocolate bars overtop and bake for 30 minutes, or until springy to the touch. Serve warm.

Halloween Fun: Spider Web Cake in a Jar

Halloween is around the corner! Okay. not quite yet, but close enough for me to start thinking of fun new things to make for the season. The other day we were playing around with some cakes in a jar and we did this fun layered-like orange and black cake that looked kind of like a spider web when it baked. We imagined the black streaks are the webs and even placed a cool plastic spider on top (which was promptly whipped off by our guest!). Just think of how fun these would be for a Halloween party!

Spider Web Cake in a Jar

1 box white cake mix

Orange food paste

Black food paste

3 one-pint canning jars

1 can vanilla frosting

Orange & Black sprinkles

Plastic spiders for garnish

1. Mix the cake mix according to directions and divided into two bowls. Use the orange food paste to make one of the bowls of batter bright orange. Make the other deep black.

2. Spray the inside of each Layer the orange and black cake mix in the jars as you would like, dividing the batter evenly amongst all three jars. Each jar should be a little over half full. We used a plastic straw to swirl the black cake batter just a little bit on the sides of the jar

3. Preheat the oven to 350F. Place the jars in a baking dish filled with enough water so that it goes 1-inch up the side of the jars. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the top of the cake springs back when touched. Allow to cool completely.

4. Dollop each jar with buttercream and add sprinkles and a spider for garnish!
