Cornbread to Go with Hefty Slider Bags

Each year we head to the cabin, and as one of several families meeting there, we take turns with who does the different meals. In situations like this, to make things easy, quick, and tasty we often prep things as far as we can before heading out.

This method is great for trips to the cabin because it cuts down on prep and dishes, leaving more time for swimming and boating, but its also a great way to bring fresh cornbread to your campsite.

Basic Cornbread

1 1/4 cups flour
3/4 cup cornmeal
1/4 cup sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 egg whites
1/4 cup honey, optional

In a Hefty Slider Bag place the flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, and salt. In a separate slider bag, place the milk, oil, and egg whites. Bring both in your cooler until ready to bake.

Heat oven to 400 F or get your fire going nice and hot. Mix the wet ingredients in the bag. Pour the wet into the dry, reseal the slider bag and then mix by massaging the bag until all infedients are moisented. Snip the corner off the bag and funnel the batter into your greased 8 loaf pan or cast iron skillet. Drizzle the honey over the top. Bake for 20-25 minutes. To bake over a campfire, cover the pan in foil before returning to the fire.

Bake until a toothpick comes out clean from the center of the cake.

Instant Ice Packs With Hefty Slider Bags

With a family of 3 kids there are always boo boos in our house. Sometimes those boo boos require a little ice. If you dont happen to have an ice pack on hand, or a frozen bag of peas, this works just great. Fill up a Hefty Slider Bag half full of ice and wrap in a kitchen towel. The towel keeps if from being too cold (or according to my kids it does). Before you know it theyll be back to their old hopefully happy selves.

Youve Got to Keep it Marinated (with Hefty Slider Bags)

Marinades are a great way to add a burst of flavor to your grill session. They infuse flavor right through your meat and make it juicy and tender, turning otherwise tough cuts of meat into supple bites. The best vessels for marinating are shallow dishes that allow the meat to be completely covered. Of course, then a zipper bag that pushes the sauce right up to the meat the entire time is even better.

Thai Chili Skirt Steak Marinade

1/4 cup fish sauce
1/4 cup rice vinegar
4 cloves garlic, crushed
2 tablespoons fresh ginger, minced
3 tablespoons red curry paste
1 tablespoon sriracha
1 tablespoon hot chili oil
3-pound flank steak
handful fresh Thai basil

Mix together fish sauce, rice vinegar, garlic, ginger, sriracha and hot chili oil in a Hefty Slider Bag. Add flank steak and cover with sauce. Allow to marinate for at least two hours.

Heat grill. Place steak on grill and baste with any extra sauce. Grill steak for 6-7 minutes. Flip and continue grilling, pressing basil leaves onto grilled side and allowing to wilt as the steak cooks.

Remove from grill and allow to sit for 5-7 minutes prior to slicing. Slice into thin strips and serve over rice and vegetables.
