Cornbread to Go with Hefty Slider Bags

Each year we head to the cabin, and as one of several families meeting there, we take turns with who does the different meals. In situations like this, to make things easy, quick, and tasty we often prep things as far as we can before heading out.

This method is great for trips to the cabin because it cuts down on prep and dishes, leaving more time for swimming and boating, but its also a great way to bring fresh cornbread to your campsite.

Basic Cornbread

1 1/4 cups flour
3/4 cup cornmeal
1/4 cup sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 egg whites
1/4 cup honey, optional

In a Hefty Slider Bag place the flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, and salt. In a separate slider bag, place the milk, oil, and egg whites. Bring both in your cooler until ready to bake.

Heat oven to 400 F or get your fire going nice and hot. Mix the wet ingredients in the bag. Pour the wet into the dry, reseal the slider bag and then mix by massaging the bag until all infedients are moisented. Snip the corner off the bag and funnel the batter into your greased 8 loaf pan or cast iron skillet. Drizzle the honey over the top. Bake for 20-25 minutes. To bake over a campfire, cover the pan in foil before returning to the fire.

Bake until a toothpick comes out clean from the center of the cake.

Brining Chicken Breast: Hefty Slider Bags

We all know that brining turkey, chicken or pork helps make the meat extra juicy. Adding salt and sugar to a water bath changes the molecular structure of the meat allowing it to hold more moisture. The results are usually delicious especially in turkey.

But sometimes you may not need to prepare a whole turkey or even a whole chicken. The brine for larger cuts of meats or birds requires a large pan or sometimes a bucket. But sometimes you may just want that one chicken breast you are cooking to end up with the same tender juicy flavor. To achieve this, simply apply your favorite brine recipe to the chicken breast and let it soak in the brine in a larger Hefty Slider bag in your refrigerator. Youll have to modify the recipe by reducing the amount of liquid, salt and sugar to match the size of meat you are brining. Just keep the ratios of ingredients the same and the brine should work beautifully.

Kitchen Tips: Tenderizing Meat with Hefty Slider Bags

When you are preparing recipes like Chicken Marsala or Pan Fried Abalone, you need to tenderize the meat. In the past Ive used parchment paper to keep the meat from breaking apart or sticking to the surface while pounding it with a mallet. The paper or even plastic wrap sometimes tears easily. There is a better way!

Youve Got to Keep it Marinated (with Hefty Slider Bags)

Marinades are a great way to add a burst of flavor to your grill session. They infuse flavor right through your meat and make it juicy and tender, turning otherwise tough cuts of meat into supple bites. The best vessels for marinating are shallow dishes that allow the meat to be completely covered. Of course, then a zipper bag that pushes the sauce right up to the meat the entire time is even better.

Thai Chili Skirt Steak Marinade

1/4 cup fish sauce
1/4 cup rice vinegar
4 cloves garlic, crushed
2 tablespoons fresh ginger, minced
3 tablespoons red curry paste
1 tablespoon sriracha
1 tablespoon hot chili oil
3-pound flank steak
handful fresh Thai basil

Mix together fish sauce, rice vinegar, garlic, ginger, sriracha and hot chili oil in a Hefty Slider Bag. Add flank steak and cover with sauce. Allow to marinate for at least two hours.

Heat grill. Place steak on grill and baste with any extra sauce. Grill steak for 6-7 minutes. Flip and continue grilling, pressing basil leaves onto grilled side and allowing to wilt as the steak cooks.

Remove from grill and allow to sit for 5-7 minutes prior to slicing. Slice into thin strips and serve over rice and vegetables.

Filling Cupcake Tins with Your Kids Hefty Slider Bags

My kids wanted to make cupcakes today. Or a cake. Or brownies. Regardless, we settled for cupcakes. So, my 5-year-old, standing there in her cherry blossom apron, tied tightly behind her back, set to work mixing and measuring, until finally they were ready to transfer into the lined cupcake tin.

I had walked away and come back in to find a single paper filled to the top with the mixture, the spoon slathered in it, and the mess growing before my eyes. Um, lets think of another way we could do this.

Searching, I could not find my large scoop that I use for filling cupcakes, but I couldnt give up or I would have a mess of sticky batter all over the tin, my counter, and up my daughters arms. Then I had a brilliant idea. More than storing things, I use Hefty Slider Bags to move food from one place to another.

Placing the bag in a cup, I fill it with the cupcake batter. I easily slide the bag closed, and then I twist it into a cone form. Placing it in my daughters grasp, I snip the tip and create the easiest squeeze bag of batter ever, allowing her to get the goo in the tins and not on her arms, the counters, and everywhere else as she had been before.

A simple solution that saves loads of scrubbing later and kept my sanity when cooking with the kids in check.

Storing Coffee Beans In Hefty Slider Bags

I dont function very well if I hadnt had my morning coffee. Its true. Just ask my family. Im the first to admit I am very particular about my coffee. I am a coffee bean girl. Party Tip: Chilling Wine with Hefty Slider Bags

When Im entertaining I spend a lot of time making sure every detail is covered. This includes a desire to make all food and drinks not only taste delicious but look pretty on the table. When you chill wine bottles in ice you run the risk of the wine label peeling off from the moisture. It can be unsightly and messy.

To avoid this, I place the bottles individual Hefty bags and then place the wine in the ice.I like using the smaller bags so my guests dont see them in the wine cooler or ice chest. But if you are worried about the ice getting into the bag, you can use a larger size Hefty slider bag. Your wine will be ice-cold and your labels will remain where they belong on the bottle!

The Best Way to Freeze Bananas with Hefty Slider Bags

Snack time is a pretty serious business around here, and one simple snack I always love to have on hand is fresh bananas. But sometimes I cant keep up with them as well as Id like to. Instead of tossing the over-ripe offenders in the trash, I just freeze them for future use perfect for afternoon smoothies or rainy day banana bread. I used to just peel the banana and wrap it in a sturdy bag (like Hefty slider bags). But recently, Ive started cutting the bananas into chunks and freezing them on a tray. This gives me a lot more flexibility later on. Just need a half a banana? No problem! Need it to thaw quickly? Ive got that covered too.

To freeze your bananas the smart way, peel and slice them into roughly 2 chunks. Lay out on a rimmed baking sheet, or plate, lined with wax or parchment paper. Freeze for 4 hours, then place in a Hefty slider bag, label with the date, and stash in the freezer for awesome smoothies down the line!

Easy School Night Dinners with Hefty Slider Bags

The end of summer is quickly approaching and so is our fairly laid back vacation schedule. In our area, school begins next week. To plan for this busy time, Ive been shopping for my sons school supplies, new clothes and gearing up for the school year. Beach Snacking With Hefty Slider Bags

We just got back from spending a few days at the beach. August is a wonderful time for a quick weekend trip because the beaches are always less crowded. To make sure a day of fun in the sun is actually FUN we have to do a little advance planning. In addition to packing: beach towels, sunscreen, extra change of clothing, and sand toys we have to make sure there are snacks and plenty of water to drink. To keep snacks separate and easy to grab we use Hefty Slider Bags. We can label each childs bag so they know whose is whose. No fighting is a good thing.

Marinating Seafood in Hefty Slider Bags

We eat a lot of seafood. We love it. However, my husband is very sensitive to any residual fishy smells in the kitchen. Recently I started using Hefty Slider bags to marinade seafood instead of another kind of container. The seal on the bags keeps the flavors and scents were they belong in the fish.

Earlier this week I posted a wonderful recipe for marinated shrimp. The recipe includes some fairly strong scents like garlic, ginger and of course fresh shrimp. After whipping up the marinade and placing the shrimp in the Hefty bags, I could even leave the bag on my counter to marinade at room temperature without enduring a strong fish odor. Granted, the marinade helps tone down the smell too but the Hefty bags really sealed in any lingering odors. When youre done you can simply throw away the bag and avoid an extra pan or container to clean.
