3 Tips for Saving at the Grocery Store

DSC 0016 3 687x1024 3 Tips for Saving at the Grocery Store

It is no secret that groceries seem to get more expensive every single year. The problem is that this meaning feeding a family only continues to get pricier even if your income doesnt rise! I shop for groceries so often probably more than the average person and have a few tips on easy ways to save at the grocery store. This isnt complicated or crazy rocket science, but they will definitely help you save a few bucks and every bit adds up!

Tip 1: Coupons!

- Every single grocery store I shop at has a leaflet of coupons and/or they can be printed out online. I always clip coupons before I settle on my final grocery list. If something you like is on sale than buy it and swap it out for something that isnt on sale and you can buy later.

Tip 2: Buy in Bulk

- The bulk aisle is a great place to save money. By purchasing only what you need and avoiding packaging you save money and increase yield. Who cares if you bring home dried couscous in a bag instead of a fancy box? It is still the same thing!

Tip 3: Stock Up on Staples

- When you see something that is non-perishable like dried soup or canned tomatoes or dry pasta on sale than by all means stock up! As long as you know youll eat it within 6 months and it can be stored in your kitchen cabinets it is worth buying more than you need and saving money in the long run.

in.gredients A Zero Waste, Package Free Grocery Store

in graphic landing page 4 aug 2012 in.gredients A Zero Waste, Package Free Grocery Store

Sometimes I walk into the grocery store and take a good long look around at all the packaging. Do it on your next trip. Its shocking to think about the boxes of pouches of food that will all end up in a landfill. I dont buy a lot of processed foods, but I still end up with a lot of packaging that gets tossed or recycled. Just look at a frozen meal, the box, then the tray the food is in all gets tossed. Im not talking just gross TV dinners, Im talking the healthy, organic frozen stuff from fancy grocers. Its not all terrible for you, but it is terrible for our environment.

One store in Austin Texas called in.gredients is thinking of our future by offering zero waste and zero packaging. How do they do it? Its really quite simple

You bring in your own containers and weigh them empty. Then you fill your containers with whats on your list and weigh it again and pay for the amount of food you purchase. Just imagine the bulk food section at your local store (although these seem to be disappearing).

The store offers products such as:

Produce locally grown, organic and in season

Grains, flours, sugars, oils, spices, milk, cheese, beer, wine, cleaners, prepared foods, and more.

So cool! I want a grocery store like this in my area. If you live in Austin, Texas you are lucky enough to shop here.

Check out in.gredients for yourself!

Know Your Garlic: A Quick Primer

hardneck garlic Know Your Garlic: A Quick Primer
With all the berries, tomatoes, and corn pouring into the markets right now, its easy to overlook the big piles of garlic. But since my personal craving for fresh garlic knows no bounds, Ive been hoarding the stuff (along with pretty much everything else). But once I got my farmers market garlic home, I wondered why is this garlic so crisp and flavorful compared to the kind from the grocery store?

It turns out the kind of garlic available locally in the north, east, and west of the US is hardneck garlic. This relatively mild variety has large cloves arranged around a hard central core, and is the same stuff that sprouts scapes earlier in the season. The variety sold at most grocery stores, and throughout the south, is softneck garlic, which is spicier, has smaller cloves, and no central stalk. Over on Brooklyn Supper, were sharing more on seasonal garlic, a quick tip for figuring out where grocery store garlic is from, and one of my favorite ways to prepare fresh garlic so that its mild, crisp, and brimming with flavor.
