10 Foods with Shocking Origins and 10 Ethical Everyday Alternatives

coffee beans 10 Foods with Shocking Origins and 10 Ethical Everyday Alternatives
We live in a society with a wealth of food choices that is probably unparalleled in history. While our great grandparents were mostly limited to the food that could be grown close to where they lived and considered imported foods like chocolate and tropical fruits to be luxuries, we can buy a banana from Central America, a cup of coffee from Ethiopia, and a host of foods our ancestors never even dreamed of for sums so trifling we dont think twice.

The downside to this abundance is that its hard to know where our food comes from and whats gone into it. But the truth is that one reason so many foods are so cheap is that theyre produced with methods that most of us would object to if we were aware of them from slavery to clear-cutting forests. Luckily we also have a lot of alternatives that allow us to eat a diet that takes full advantage of the worlds bounty without taking ethical shortcuts. Here are ten common foods with unsavory origins and ten alternatives you can feel good about.

Homemade Tomato Jam: Save Summers Best Flavor

tomato jam toast babble Homemade Tomato Jam: Save Summers Best Flavor
Last week, I had about 10 pounds of paste tomatoes staring me down. I had already made canned whole tomatoes, and marinara, so I decided it was time to try tomato jam. Lots and lots and lots of tomato jam, as it turned out.

Have you ever had tomato jam? The flavor might surprise you. It has a concentrated tomato flavor, coupled with sweetness, spice, and just a hint of heat. You could easily slather it on toast with butter, or use it is a ketchup-like veggie dip. I dropped a couple tablespoons into my favorite vinaigrette and was surprised by the jolt of tomato intensity it gave my late summer salad.

So what do you say? Are you ready to give tomato jam a try?

Head over to Brooklyn Supper for our recipe.
