Make Marble Coasters Using Flooring Tile

Go to any nice retailer selling high-quality housewares and youll see lots of coasters made out of tumbled stone or marble. The rustic elegance is great for your table but not your wallet. A set of 4 stone coasters can cost anywhere from $15.00 to $30.00 depending upon the design.

When I was wandering through the flooring section of Home Depot the other day, I noticed they had the same 44 tiles in a variety of beautiful stones. This Travertino stone is exactly like the tiles used for those expensive tiles. At Home Depot you can buy a set of 9 for less than $4.00

You can either leave the stone alone or your can customize it with different colors or patterns. To make your own coasters simply remove the tiles from the plastic wrap and make sure all tiles are in tact and without any chips. Use a sponge and wipe off the dust from both sides of the tiles and let them dry. The fastest way to add some color to the stone is to buy a pre-printed ink stamp and just stamp the surface of the stone and let it dry. You can also use paper or fabric to cover the stone in different colors. Coat the tiles with a layer of Mod Podge adhesive and place pre-cut paper on top of adhesive. Add another coating of Mod Podge to paper and allow to dry. If you see any ripples or bubbles in the paper, gently smooth with your fingertips while the adhesive is still wet. Next add a clear acrylic sealer can be used to remove any stickiness from adhesives. But a package of small felt circles (also available at Home Depot) and place one on each corner of the table-side of the tile. You can make your own custom tiles for your next party or give them as gifts!

How to Make Cheese Boards Using Floor Tiles

Wandering the aisles of Home Depot recently, looking at options for a new kitchen floor, it occurred to me that the single floor tiles would make perfect cheese and charcuterie boards and were a steal at under $2 apiece. I generally use platters or cutting boards to arrange cheeses on, but I love the smooth, cool marble of a floor tile and the fact that I can have a whole variety of colors, textures and sizes in my kitchen for under $10. Cheese and charcuterie boards are an easy, trendy way to entertain and using floor tiles makes presentation easy.

I picked up a few different tiles in a variety of surfaces some square, others rectangular, some glossy, some matte they ranged in price from $1.40 $1.87.

I figured they might be awkward to pick up if set out flat on the table, and their rough undersides might scratch some surfaces, so we picked up a package of rubber feet the peel and stick kind.

They cost around $2 also at Home Depot. They also had felt ones and cork ones, but I figured the silicone kind would be more washable of course with a felt bottom, it would be easy to simply wipe the surface of the tile. An alternative might be to glue a square of felt to the bottom.

Although they stuck quite firmly, I added a dab of glue for good measure.

One in each corner and I had built 4 different cheese and charcuterie boards in about 5 minutes, for around $2 apiece. I may just make more to give as Christmas gifts this year and maybe at some point Ill choose a new kitchen floor to match!

The Mat That Saved my Back (and my Preserves)

I spend a lot of time in the kitchen. I cook for a living I write about it, and talk about it on TV and radio. And so Im always testing recipes and styling photo shoots, and of course because I love cooking I love putting up preserves in the fall jam, chutney, pickles and the like. At 6 ft tall, standing at the counter on hardwood floors for hours can do a number on my back.

And so I decided to do what restaurant chefs and baristas do to save their backs I picked up an anti-fatigue mat from Home Depot to set down in my high-traffic area, that spot of the counter beside the stove where I wind up doing most of my work.

There are far more types of mats available in the US all sturdy and washable, all designed with the goal of protecting your knees and back from long periods of standing on a hard floor. The mat I chose has interlocking sides, so that you could conceivably cover a side or corner of your kitchen with a springy rubber surface, and its easy to lift up when you want to mop. I just pick mine up and keep it in a roll in the basement when Im not cooking for long stretches.

But for now, because its fall, Ill be making Crabapple-Cranberry Slow Cooker Chutney, cranberry-pear-ginger preserves, green tomato chutney, ginger pickled carrots, apricot jam and pickled everything.
