In the last few years people have become more aware about the importance of fresh locally grown produce. In addition to the superior quality and freshness that can be delivered by your local farmer, there are many environmental reasons to buy local. But not everyone has access or time to visit their local farmers markets. And not everyone wants to invest in a CSA membership. A new start-up company called CitySprout was created to bring fresh locally grown produce to your neighborhood.

Here is how it works. . . Simply visit the CitySprout website and register your location or neighborhood. CitySprout will pair you with a local farmer who can deliver to your area. If you have neighbors who would also like a delivery you encourage them to register too. When there are enough people interested, the farmer will take orders from each person and deliver their orders to a designated representative in the neighborhood. All you have to do is pick up your order from your neighbor when its delivery day! The farmer will have a variety of produce available based upon their season and harvest. There are no delivery fees and the prices are set by the farmers. According to CitySprout, the farmers prices are competitive with other options like CSAs and farmers markets. And unlike CSAs, you can order in smaller quantities or by the box. Its a great way to support local farmers and get the best available produce in your area.

Almond Butter Ripple Crunch Shake

I think cool, frosty, shake-like, ice cream-y, dessert treats always sound better with the word ripple in the title. You agree? Fudge ripple. Caramel ripple. Vanilla cinnamon ripple. Pecan caramel ripple. Can someone make all these (vegan) shakes for me please because they just sound so tasty! Ill blame the ripple part. And this Almond Butter Ripple Crunch Shake is no exception. Light and crunchy sliced almonds mingle with sweet banana, coconut and cinnamon flavors. And a secret ingredient worth trying!..

The secret ingredient? Coconut milk ice cubes! Im obsessed with these things. I freeze plain old (full fat or light) coconut milk into ice cube trays and blend a few cubes into my shakes and smoothies. Ice cream effect done! Dairy free and vegan!

Almond Butter Ripple Crunch Shake
serves 1-2, vegan

1 1/2 bananas, frozen
1/3 cup sliced almonds (the crunch part!)
a few dashes cinnamon
3/4 cup soy milk, vanilla
1 tsp maple or agave syrup (optional use if your bananas were not super ripe when frozen)
1/4 cup coconut milk ice cubes (2-4 cubes)

ripple swirl:
1 Tbsp almond butter + 1 tsp maple or agave syrup (warm slightly for easier blending)

garnish: more sliced almonds

Directions:

1. Blend the almond butter ripple sauce. Warm in microwave if needed to stir well.
2. Blend the smoothie ingredients the sliced almond make things crisp and lovely. They add the CRUNCH!
3. Pour smoothie into glass half way they swirl in some ripple sauce. Then add remaining smoothie and remaining ripple. Add almonds to garnish.

In the world of cooking, making a quesadilla isnt difficult or complicated. But when you are trying to feed the kids a healthy breakfast in the morning and limit the clean-up a quesadilla with eggs can get a little tricky. Catherine McCord of the wonderful website Weelicious.com decided to make a breakfast quesadilla that wouldnt fall apart and only takes five minutes to make.

Catherine decided to cook her eggs like in an omelette rather than scramble the eggs. She cooks the eggs, covers them with a tortilla and then flips them onto a plate. The result is a perfectly flat shape that fits beautifully between two tortillas. The eggs stay nestled in the quesadilla instead of ending up on floor or your lap. You can add anything to the filling. You could even sneak in some vegetables between the layers of egg and cheese. If Im making this for me Im adding some sliced Hatch green chiles!

Tender Asian Turkey Burger

Earlier this month I rounded up some of our best burger recipes right here on Family Kitchen. It dawned on me that I rarely make turkey or chicken burgers. Often times they turn out dry and lack flavor. So I decided to try and create a turkey burger that would be moist and flavorful.

I decided to use turkey thighs. The additional fat would help the burger retain some moisture and flavor. They were delicious. However, I have also tried this recipe using the lighter turkey breasts and they were also good and not at all dry. To add even more moisture I used milk-soaked bread instead of bread crumbs. Ive always done this when I make homemade meatballs and it works really well. And it worked just as well with turkey burgers. If you have a family with a hungry appetite then you may want to double this recipe. These burgers go down easily!

I love the Asian-inspired flavors in this recipe but you can easily modify this with other ingredients. Replace the Thai chiles, soy sauce and ginger with some jalapeno, adobe sauce and fresh cilantro for a great Southwestern flavor. The sky is the limit!

The Recipe Tender Asian Turkey Burger

Yield: 4 burgers

Ingredients:

1 lb freshly ground turkey thighs
3 garlic cloves, minced
2 spring onions, diced
1 tsp freshly grated ginger
1 Thai chile pepper, diced (optional)
1/4 cup organic soy sauce
3 slices of white bread, crusts removed
1/4 milk (or enough to just saturate white bread)
Sea salt and ground pepper

Method:

Preheat barbecue grill to medium high.
Soak slices of bread in milk until just saturated. If bread seems really soaked, gently wring it out until its wet but not overly soaked.
In a bowl add ground turkey, soaked bread, soy sauce, garlic, ginger, diced chiles. Mix well with your clean hands until blended. Add spring onions until blended. Dont overwork the meat. The meat should hold together and not be too moist or fall apart.
Wet your hands first then form mixture into burgers that are no thicker than 1/2 inch. Cook on the grill approximately 4 minutes per side. Remove from grill and allow to rest for a few minutes before serving with
your favorite condiments. I like to swirl a little Sriracha in mayonnaise or ketchup.

Who doesnt love the taste of cookie dough? When I make chocolate chip cookies I love the dough without the chocolate chips. Apparently, Im not alone! My friend Chef Dawn Viola also loves the vanilla and brown sugar infused flavors in Americas favorite cookies. Perhaps that is how the blondie was invented.

The flavors in blondies arent overwhelmed by chocolate. The texture is reminiscent of a brownie.. warm and chewy but the flavors taste a lot like that spoonful of cookie dough batter you snagged while mom was looking the other way.

Labor Day Crowd Pleaser: French Onion Dip

When I was a kid, a packet of French Onion Soup Mix being stirred into a tub of sour cream indicated that company was coming over. We were probably having a backyard barbecue and there had to be a bag of ruffled potato chips somewhere nearby.

I figured, I couldnt possibly be the only one that had a salivatory response to, and still has fond memories for, good ol French Onion Dip.

And it turns out, Im not. I made this nostalgic onion dip at my last barbecue and I wouldnt be exaggerating to say there was jockeying for position around the dip!

Party people were dipping everything in sight into the vat of caramelized creaminess: veggies, chips, chicken skewers, jalapeno poppers, tater-tots; you name it. Complete mayhem ensued when one brave soul smeared it on his burger buns. Ive never felt like I needed a bouncer for an appetizer before, but this Homemade French Onion Dip may qualify.

Lets just say, its a bona fide crowd pleaser for your Labor Day party.

Like Kramers coffee table book that turns into a coffee table, here are some bread boards made out of bread. Brilliant, no? Not only does woodworker Geoffrey Lilge make charcuterie boards and chopping blocks out of bread just for fun he makes them by hand out of solid walnut and maple. The result: stunning pieces that will last a lifetime and add form and function to any kitchen.

Tasked with outfitting the kitchen and dining room of his wifes soon-to-be-award-winning restaurant, finding the perfect cutting and charcuterie boards quickly became an obsession. With the end of summer just around the corner it is time to take advantage of the last few flavors of the season while they are still here. One of our favorite things all summer long is watermelon. Yes, we will be able to get it practically year round, but it really is the best in the summer. This time of year I like to take advantage of the fresh fruit and make it into dishes that are both savory and sweet.

This watermelon salad is a particular favorite of ours because it is tangy, sweet, and savory all at once. I also love it because it can truly be made at the last minute. Perfect Chocolate Chunk Cookies

We all have our favorite go to chocolate chip cookie recipe. I have several recipes I use. This one is definitely simple and works very well every time even in our high altitude kitchen. I like to use really good quality chocolate bars and break them into chunks. You can vary the flavor by adding bittersweet or white chocolate to the batter. Or add your favorite chopped nuts.The sky is the limit on variations but the result will always be perfectly chewy chocolate chunk cookies!

The Recipe:

8 ounces (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 cup packed dark brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar (or 1/2 cup light brown sugar for a rich flavor)
2 large eggs
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
4 cups good quality semisweet chocolate chunks (may break a chocolate bar into chunks by hand)

Method:

1. Place the butter in a large bowl and cream at high speed until fluffy. Add the sugars and beat until light and fluffy, about 4 minutes, scraping down sides of bowl occasionally. Beat in eggs, one at a time, until mixed.

2. In a separate bowl, mix flour, salt and baking soda. Add to the butter mixture at low speed until just combined and add vanilla extract. Beat on medium speed, scraping bowl down, until blended. Do not overmix.

3. Add chocolate chunks and mix till thoroughly combined. Refrigerate batter until cold, preferably overnight. You can also freeze the batter at this point and cut off the desired amount you would like to bake each time you are craving cookies.

4. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line several baking sheets with parchment paper. Drop heaping spoonfuls of batter 2 inches apart on the lined baking sheets and bake, turning tray once, until golden brown around edges and soft (but not bubbly), about 8-9 minutes. Cool on a wire rack.

The long weekend is nearly upon us, and a heat wave is on the way. Were getting ready for summers last gasp with beach plans, plenty of grillables, and lots of fresh end-of-summer sips. One of my new favorites is this vivid purple blackberry limeade. Its tangy and sweet, with a hint of bitterness from the fresh lime. Sophisticated, fresh, and so kid-friendly, this limeade is just the thing to end your little ones summer with a bang.

Fresh Blackberry Limeade
serves 4

3 cups blackberries (for just over 3/4 cup blackberry puree)
1/2 2/3 cup sugar
juice of 6 7 large limes, or just over 3/4 cup
1 cup water
whole blackberries and lime wedges for garnish

Decide how much sugar youll need cut back for sweet berries and add more for tart ones. Using a masher or fork, smash the blackberries and sugar together. Set aside while you juice the limes.

Juice the limes. Add the lime juice and water to the blackberry mixture and stir vigorously.

Serve over plenty of ice with a sliced lime and blackberry garnish

Its hard to believe that Labor Day weekend is already upon us. It marks the unofficial end of summer. Many will go camping or host one more pool party or backyard barbecue. And what better drink to send off summer than a freshly made seasonal cocktail using sweet late summer peaches!

When I saw this beautiful mojito recipe by my friend Chef Viviane Bauquet Farre, I just knew it deserved a place on my weekend menu. Here in Colorado, we are still enjoying wonderful local peaches. And ginger is always a welcome ingredient to just about any recipe in my house so I am confident this drink will become a summer tradition.

In my quest for cooking knowledge and ideas, I read a lot of blogs. Im amazed at the culinary wizardry in so many wonderful blogs from across the country. Every year I discover new sites to add to my growing bookmark lists but there are a few that remain at the top of my list of favorites. White on Rice Couple with Todd and Diane Cu is at the very top of that list. Gorgeous photography, delicious recipes and compelling writing keep me coming back to their site whenever I need a little inspiration. Last year, Todd and Diane posted a variation of a focaccia recipe by famed restauranteur Nancy Silverton. Nancy was inspired to recreate a perfect focaccia bread she had experienced in Italy. Considering her baking mastery, it is no surprise that she perfected the recipe. Todd and Diane took it a step further by simplifying the recipe.

To say this recipe is great would be an understatement. The lightly spongy, salty and perfectly olive oily bread is better than what youll find in most Italian restaurants. But my favorite aspect of this recipe is just how simple it is to make even at my home in Colorado at nearly 8,000 feet above sea level. I make it all the time. I crave it. Once you make it, it will become part of your kitchen traditions too.

Miso Maple Lemon Kale Chips
makes 2-3 cups

1 large bunch green kale

sauce:
1 heaping Tbsp white miso paste
1/4 cup lemon juice
2 Tbsp maple syrup
1/4 tsp black pepper
a few dashes cayenne (optional)
2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil

added: 1/4 cup nutritional yeast (optional)

Directions:

1. Turn oven to lowest setting to preheat around 200 degrees works. (Or dehydrate if youd like!)
2. De-vein kale and wash + dry leaves well.
3. Mix up sauce in large bowl.
4. Toss the kale i the sauce then dredge the leaves through the nutritional yeast to coat.
5. Lay leaves on a greased baking sheet or wax paper.
6. Bake until crispy. Depending on how wet you soaked your kale this could take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours. Keep checking and when the leaves are crispy they are done!

So, its official: baby on board. We are nearing the halfway point and feeling good and now I am starting to think about baby gear. Earlier this spring I wrote about feeding tools I loved to use with my daughter but now I am thinking about the next baby. Luckily, one of my favorite brands, Dr. Browns, has a whole new level of awesome offerings and I am plan use a lot of them.

I loved using their bottles with my daughter, their venting system did a wonderful job eliminating extra bubbles and she rarely had gas problems. They also have an amazing selection of training cups for the bottle-to-cup transitions and some cool pacifiers. I am so glad theyve expanded on their great products in the past five years! I also love that they are so committed to keeping everything BPA-free and made in the USA.

Once we are past the the liquid feeding stage I also plan to use their great solid preparation products. For example, the Puree & Simple Blender, and the Make-a-Smash Food Masher. They even have a whole line of dish, spoons, and stackable storage containers. Genius! I am so excited to try all their new products, as well as their tried and true favorite bottles. These days, many schools require (or at least request) students pack a litter-free lunch, minimizing the amount of trash that must be picked up and transported to either recycling centres or the local landfill. When hundreds of kids a day bring lunch and snacks wrapped in plastic or foil, and plenty of wrappered and packaged foods, it can add up to a big pile of garbage. Here are some ways to cut back on the waste in your kids daily school meal.

Invest in a good-quality, reusable Bento box.

Any hard plastic carrying case - there are many small, inexpensive ones available that are designed to carry fishing tackle, sewing notions and art supplies - are great to pack finger-sized foods in.
