Living in NYC is always eventful, but the past few weeks have been a little much. My family was fortunate to be untouched by the flood waters or wind from Sandy, but were just devastated about the destruction and loss of life in some of the costal neighborhoods around the region. Weve been doing our best to volunteer and donate, so when a local mom put together a bake sale to benefit Sandys victims, we were on it. I wanted to make something that would stand out a little, so I baked up these decadent salted caramel blondies.
Theyre at once comforting (which is huge right now), sophisticated, and just plain good. I made my own caramel, and cooked it to a rich golden brown, which lent a hint of smokiness to the blondies. Finished with a generous sprinkle of sea salt, these guys were pretty fantastic.
And the bake sale? It made over $2,000 dollars which will be given to charities helping folks in Staten Island, the site of so much truly heartbreaking destruction.
