Fried Cheese Pops

Cheese HEADER SM Fried Cheese Pops

When I was a kid, my mom would take us to the movies as the Odgen City Mall, then walk us afterward to Hot Dog on a Stick, where shed buy us a cheesy corn dog. Id get to the end of my stick and wish I could eat another one. Something about that buttery batter, and that gooey, melted cheese, made those corn dogs seem unbelievably delicious. Knowing what I know now about nutrition and proper eating habits, I dont think Id ever feel right springing for a whole hot dog on a stick, so these little one-bite cheese pops hit the spot instead! They are absurdly simple to make, and soooo delicious. The perfect autumn appetizers for just about any party.

Fried Cheese Pops

  • 1 lb. muenster or monterey jack cheese, cut into 3/4 cubes
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 1/4 cup beer or water
  • 2 cups oil for frying

Press sucker sticks into the center of each cheese cube. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, cornmeal, baking soda, salt, lemon juice and beer. Add more beer, if needed, until the mixture is about the thickness of pancake batter. Dip cheese sticks into the batter, completely covering the cheese with the batter. Heat oil in a small pot to medium heat. Dip the cheese portion of each stick into the hot oil, just until golden brown (about 20-30 seconds). Remove, serve and enjoy!
