Choosing a Rug for the Hardest Working Room in the House

I am convinced I have the smallest, hardest working kitchen in Southern California.

Almost every day, I prepare three meals for my husband and I, because we both work from home. Several times a month, Im in the kitchen for 10 hours shooting video recipes; just me, my camera and remote control. And on special days, my 24 square feet looks like the controlled chaos pictured above.

my 24 square foot kitchen

As Ive mentioned before, we have laminate flooring throughout our home, including those precious 24 square feet.

And the truth is, Ive been so in love with the clean look and hassle-free maintenance of the laminate Ive never even thought of an area rug for the kitchen.

Lately however, the thought of an area rug has been crossing my mind a lot more.

I love the warmth and pop of color that area rugs add to our bathrooms, so why not the kitchen?

I also love the idea of a cushioned comfort mat to help ease those long days standing in the kitchen.

But have you seen all the options for area rugs out there?

With only two candidates in the Presidential Election, thankfully, Im not one of those kooky undecided voters. In fact, I usually make pretty painless, well-informed and thought out, marginally quick decisions.

But there are 5,846 area rugs on the Home Depot website! Honestly, I could spend well into 2013 trying to choose an area rug for my kitchen!

Ive narrowed it down to these 6 for various reasons but Im having a little trouble pulling the trigger. So Im hoping you can help me decide!

The advantages? Comfort rugs are better for your knees and back. They are more industrial looking, but also seem like they would be low maintenance. The draw back? They arent warm and fuzzy like area rugs can be.

The advantages? Red is my favorite color. I have bursts of red all over the house and the kitchen is no exception. The shag looks like it would be super fun and a great conversation starter. The cons? Red does seem to show traffic and dirt a bit more easily and needs to be vacuumed more frequently. I also worry about the life span of shag carpeting in the kitchen.

The advantages? Both of these multi-colored rugs are out of my comfort zone, but I like them. They would provide the color and warmth I am looking for and would probably resist the appearance of debris and stains. The down side? I could see myself getting tired of these more quickly than something more simple.

So what do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments and help me decide on my new kitchen area rug.
